FJ test drive
Dec 12th, 2005 at 2:09pm

Hi all.
Not completely in Idaho yet. So I went to the socal christmas party.  We had one of the Toyota FJ's there. I got to drive it on the street. V6 auto power steering tilt steering, nice stereo. It handled well, very comfortable with plenty of room. i'm 6-3 270 lbs and could even sit in the back. Price is suppose to range from 25 to 30 thou.  V6 had semi snorkle set up to prefilter air. LIttle hard to see out the back corners, windows almost useless. This is the third time the socal club has specked the fj. First the concept, an early production (both at Toyota) and now the actual vehicle. The driver has it on loan for a writeup in one of the 4 wheel mags. Interesting to talk with, did the rubicon in one and has been wheeling this one in the local mountains. He liked the FJ comparied to the Jeeps he has been testing.

Wow!  And all we had at our xmas party was a 40 frame on jack-stands.

So does it feel solid like a cruiser, or more tinny like a mini?

Every thing felt and sounded very solid, but it didn't feel heavy. An example would be the hood. it had some flex but when you shut it, it felt very stable. no hinge play in the doors. The drive from the mag said it handled well in the limited offroading that he had done. One interesting comment he made was he spent more than an hour get the fj airborn to see how it held up. Apparently noting broken since he went to the carwash from the mountains directly to the party. He did say the fj needed a tire upgrade.I liked it, so I may let the wife buy one for herself.

My wife said she'd trade the '80 in on one.  I'd rather take the 80 for myself.  I don't want a car payment right now, so it'll be a few years.  I'd like to see them introduce a removable hard top in 2-3 years, then I definitely will be on-board.
