'81 FJ40 pricing advice
Oct 17th, 2007 at 6:43pm

Some of you may have seen my white FJ40 parked on the corner of 14th and Fort in Boise for the last 7 years.  I'm looking to sell it now, but I really have no clue as to it's value.  She's been parked for 2 years, and is suffering due to that.  I've just had the fuel pump replaced, but it looks like the carbeurator needs to be rebuilt to get her running.  Other than that, the engine has a slow leak in the radiator and brake line, but no other problems that I am aware of.  It has approx 145,000 miles on it, and I've been the only owner since '91 (and 3rd overall).  Everything is original, except for some rust repair that I had done on the rear fenders and a paint job about 12 years ago.  There is rust on the sides and back fenders, damage to the door handles, one tailight and the housing for the front blinkers.  There's been lot's of interest in her over the years, but no one has ever really quoted a price for her.
Can anyone give me a broad $$ range that might be reasonable for such a rig?
Thanks for any help you can give me!

As it's an '81, it should be worth more than the average FJ40.  The rust on yours is what's going to turn people off.  I'd say get it running at least, before you try selling it.  I've seen them from $3500 up to $15,000.  Maybe start out at $6500 and see what kind of offers you get.  Are you putting it on Craigs, ebay, cars.com?  You'll probably get more for it if you go national.  Check out the vehicle for sale section of mud, http://forum.ih8mud.com/search.php?searchid=2513697 for some ideas on price.

The late model ones that bring the big money have AC and PS.  If it doesn't have these things I wouldn't expect to get the really big money for it.  Not running, rust, it all depends.  I saw an 82 sell in Portland a few weeks ago for $800.  It was pretty rusty and didn't run.  There are drawbacks to the later years too.  Lifts aren't readily available and there are some other oddball deals.  Without seeing it, it is impossible to give a real estimate of value.

Yes, It is currently at State St. Auto Repair.  They were checking out the carb. for me.  He let me know it was going to have to be rebuilt or replaced.

It's this one.  I've bugged him a few times about it.  I don't need another cruiser though.

Hey Jackass!
I thought you'd stop by when you saw that she's been gone for the last couple of months (sitting at the shop).
Do you have a recommendation of what would be reasonable to ask for.  I'm definitely ready to move her on, so I want to price to sell.
She needs some good TLC, so I'd love sell her to someone from this site.

You had me worried for about 2-days, then I saw it at State St. Auto and figured you were getting it ready to sell.  I'm trying to figure out how to maintain my current collection, there's no way I could take on another.  I'll stop by this weekend and check it out closer and then pay you a visit.

I found a buyer who's ready to take on a project.  I'm looking forward to her getting back on and off the road.
